Heights University Hospital Cuts Services, Raising Concerns About Countywide Health Impact

Hudson Regional Health announced Wednesday it is withdrawing its Certificate of Need application to close Heights University Hospital in Jersey City, canceling a public hearing that had been scheduled for that same evening at the facility.

The announcement came on the day of a planned public hearing that the North NJ Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America had been organizing residents, elected officials, and community leaders to attend and testify at.

In a statement, HRH said it has been encouraged by renewed discussions with its landlord about potentially restoring healthcare services at the location. “HRH has always intended to provide critical healthcare access in a manner that is financially sustainable in the Heights,” the company said. “As a result of these ongoing discussions, HRH has decided to withdraw its Certificate of Need application for closure.”

HRH said leadership will continue to engage with elected officials on the most appropriate way to provide healthcare to the Heights community.

The development marks the latest turn in a months-long crisis at the facility. HudPost has covered the story since October 2025, when HRH first threatened demolition of the property for luxury residential development. The hospital, known for more than a century as Christ Hospital, shut down most services in November 2025 before closing its emergency department in March 2026, prompting an unsuccessful emergency injunction by the city.
