Former Hudson County Weights and Measures Chief Charged With $250K Theft

A former Hudson County Superintendent of Weights and Measures has been charged with theft and official misconduct following an investigation into more than $250,000 in diverted funds, Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello announced.
Frank Alonso, 58, of Union City, was arrested Tuesday, July 14, 2026, by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Unit. He is charged with three counts of official misconduct, pattern of official misconduct, and three counts of theft by unlawful taking. He was released pending his first court appearance.
According to authorities, between January 2024 and January 2026, Alonso diverted funds intended for the Hudson Regional Health Commission, the Office of Weights and Measures, and the New Jersey Weights and Measures Association into accounts used for personal gain. In a separate complaint, he is charged with using checks without the account holder’s authorization. The reported thefts exceed $250,000.
The charges follow an investigation the county says it launched in late December into irregularities in the Office of Weights and Measures, which was then under the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office. The county suspended Alonso without pay in January and later terminated him.
“Corrupt public officials must be held accountable for their bad actions,” Hudson County Executive Craig Guy said in a statement. “I applaud the Prosecutor’s Office for carrying out this investigation and I pledge to assist in any way possible.”
Guy said the county moved the Office of Weights and Measures under its Law Department to provide better oversight and has had no issues since the transition. He also said he announced plans this week to establish the first-ever Office of Inspector General in Hudson County to serve as an internal watchdog.
Alonso, a former Union City Republican chair, ran unsuccessfully for State Assembly in 2025.
