La Kausa, a Peruvian restaurant in North Bergen, is celebrating 15 years of serving authentic Peruvian cuisine and creating a gathering place for families across the community.

Founded by the Barrientos family, the restaurant was built on a love for Peruvian culture and the memories that food helped preserve after the family immigrated to the United States more than two decades ago.

“Food became our connection to home,” said Karla, daughter of the Barrientos family. “It helped us stay connected to our roots, traditions, and identity. Opening La Kausa was our way of sharing that feeling with others.”

Over the years, La Kausa has grown into more than a restaurant, becoming a place where families celebrate milestones and experience the flavors of Peru.

“It’s been an incredible honor to serve this community,” Barrientos said. “We’ve built relationships with generations of families and have had the privilege of celebrating some of life’s biggest moments alongside them.”

Among the restaurant’s most popular dishes are Lomo Saltado, Chaufa, and Ceviche.

The Barrientos family credits much of the restaurant’s success to its loyal customers, dedicated staff, and commitment to treating every guest like family. One memory that stands out is of a customer who became emotional after tasting their Sancocho, sharing that it reminded him of his mother’s cooking.

“Moments like that remind us that food is more than a meal,” Barrientos said. “It’s memory, culture, family, and a connection to where we come from.”
