Heights University Hospital Shuts Down Most Services After State Declines Funding Request

Heights University Hospital ceased nearly all operations on November 15, 2025, after New Jersey state officials denied the full request for emergency financial support from its parent company, Hudson Regional Health (HRH).
The 153-year-old institution, formerly known as Christ Hospital, will now operate only its emergency room.
HRH, which acquired the facility less than a year ago, claimed it faced mounting financial losses, largely due to serving a high volume of uninsured and low-income patients. HRH acknowledged the hospital’s financial deficit was deeper than initially expected, leading to recent payroll issues.
The closure has raised community concern, particularly over HRH exploring long-term plans for the property, including proposals for residential towers. Local residents and officials worry the shutdown will accelerate redevelopment and leave the Heights neighborhood without a full-service hospital.
The facility’s future remains uncertain, with the emergency room as the only service currently operational.
