Freight Train Derailment and Chemical Spill Reported in North Bergen

A CSX train derailed 13 rail cars near 2425 Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen at approximately 3:16 p.m. Tuesday, the railroad confirmed in a statement to HudPost.

North Bergen Police, North Bergen Fire Department, and Jersey City Fire Department responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.

CSX confirmed that while car No. 27 was carrying ethyl acetate, there were no hazmat leaks or spills. “Our primary focus is on the safety of onsite personnel, the surrounding community, and the environment,” CSX Director of Media Relations Austin Staton said. CSX’s hazmat team confirmed the absence of any leak or spill Tuesday night with North Bergen Fire Chief Donnarumma, the onsite incident commander.

CSX crews are on scene working to clean up the impacted site. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

Mayor Nick Sacco said Hazmat teams were on scene working to dilute what he identified as ethyl acetate with large amounts of water. CSX has since confirmed no leak or spill occurred. Route 3 eastbound and westbound remains closed near Tonnelle Avenue. Tonnelle Avenue northbound and southbound remains open.

Correction: An earlier version of this article’s headline referenced a chemical spill. CSX has confirmed to HudPost that while car No. 27 carried ethyl acetate, no leak or spill occurred. The headline has been updated accordingly. Mayor Nick Sacco’s original statement, which referenced Hazmat teams diluting the substance, has been retained in the article as it reflects what was said at the time by a public official.
