North Bergen Resident and Former Urologist Sentenced to Life for Sexual Abuse of Patients, Including Minors
North Bergen resident and former urologist, Darius A. Paduch, has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually abusing patients over more than a decade. A jury convicted Paduch earlier this year on multiple counts of inducing minors and adults to engage in unlawful sexual activity. The abuse occurred during his tenure at prominent medical institutions in Manhattan and Long Island.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams condemned Paduch’s actions, stating, “Paduch was a sexual predator who exploited his trusted position as a renowned urologist to gratify his desires. Today’s sentence demonstrates accountability for medical providers who commit such grave violations of trust.”
From 2007 to 2019, Paduch used medical exams as a pretext to assault patients, including children. Evidence presented in court detailed incidents of invasive and inappropriate physical contact, coercion under the guise of medical care, and repeated violations of vulnerable individuals, some of whom were minors.
During the sentencing, 11 victims testified, and dozens more provided statements recounting their experiences. Paduch’s actions included luring minors under the pretense of internships and furthering abuse in personal settings, such as his boat.
In addition to the life sentence, restitution for the victims will be determined at a later date.
This high-profile case underscores the importance of vigilance in safeguarding patient rights and prosecuting abusers in positions of power. Hudson County residents and local organizations can access resources to support survivors of sexual abuse through various community services.
