Jersey City is edging closer to three recreational marijuana dispensaries. The Jersey City Cannabis Control Board has approved 8 applicants so far. The businesses still have to apply for adult-use cannabis licenses with the state of New Jersey. Here are the 8 marijuana dispensaries to keep an eye out for in 2023.

Blossom Dispensary was the first approved dispensary back in May 2022 and will be located at 746 Tonnelle Ave. Their owners are sisters Bina Bhatt and Sapna Batt who grew up and now reside in Jersey City. The business plans on hiring locally, including residents with past drug convictions, and residents with parents or spouses who have drug convictions.

MMD NJ Inc. is a dispensary that will be located on 655 Newark Ave in Journal Square. Steven and Michael Ashbel are brothers from California who have thirteen dispensary locations in California and Missouri. They plan on hiring 90 percent local.

Decades Dispensary will be based on 404 Central Ave. in the Heights. The owners are Neel Patel and Bakula Patel. Bakula Patel is a pediatric physical therapist in Jersey City where she grew up. The couple has been involved with dispensaries in Massachusetts, Ohio, and Connecticut

Butler & Baldwin intends to open up on 75 Martin Luther Dr. in Greenville. The business is named after African American authors Octavia Butler and James Baldwin. Fittingly, the firm will have a bookstore of minority authors along with artwork from local minority artists. The company is black-owned and women-owned by Jennifer Moore, the daughter of Council President Joyce Watterman, and David Moore.

Leaf Joint is currently a CBD store soon-to-be marijuana store on 391 Central Ave in the Heights a block away from the police station.

Uforia Dispensary was one of the applicants approved and plans to set up in the Heights on 138 Griffith St. The owner is Bashkim Spahi, an Albian American and the son of Muslim immigrant refugees. His company’s primary mission is childhood prevention and ensuring the community is safe. This is inspired by his childhood where he lost friends to gun and drug-related violence. His company has gained a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the Jersey City Anti-Violence Coalition Movement. Spahi plans on getting to Muslim community involved with his establishment.

Another approved applicant was Cannabis Place 420 Corp., which plans on establishing in Greenville on 1542 John F. Kennedy Blvd. Osbert Orduña, the owner, is a first-generation Latino on the executive board of the tristate chapter of the Hispanic Cannabis Council and a Marine Corp veteran. He became disabled during his deployment in Iraq.

Finally, Kushmart Jersey was the third dispensary approved and will be down the block of Cannabis Place Place on 1521 Kennedy Blvd. It plans on being a retail and consumption establishment. They plan on employing 10 percent of their staff from the New Jersey Reentry Program and the Greenville neighborhood.
