Secaucus University Hospital Ranks Among Top US Hospitals for Sepsis Care

Secaucus University Hospital earned the highest score of any hospital in New Jersey for how well it treats sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection, according to new federal data.

The hospital, part of Hudson Regional Health, received a score of 98 out of 100 in the latest report from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Federal data shows that score is the highest among 61 New Jersey hospitals measured, ahead of St. Luke’s Warren Hospital in Phillipsburg at 95 and Heights University Hospital in Jersey City at 93.

The score measures how consistently a hospital follows recommended steps for quickly diagnosing and treating patients with severe sepsis and septic shock.

“Achieving this milestone is a testament to our continued focus on clinical excellence and reflects the high standards of care our patients can expect every day at Hudson Regional Health,” said Chairman of the Board Yan Moshe.

Dr. Nizar Kifaieh, CEO and President of Hudson Regional Health, said fast treatment saves lives. “Sepsis is a medical emergency where every minute matters, and this recognition reflects our continued dedication to early identification and evidence-based protocols that help save lives,” Kifaieh said.

Sepsis happens when the body’s response to an infection begins to damage its own tissues and organs. According to the health system, catching it early and treating it quickly can greatly improve a patient’s chances of recovery.
