Jersey City, NJ – Mekhail Sarofiem, a County Prep High School graduate and lifelong Jersey City resident, has been sworn in as a municipal court judge, making history as one of the youngest judges in New Jersey. At just 32 years old, Sarofiem brings his legal expertise and a profound commitment to his community into this significant new role.

Born to Egyptian immigrant parents who raised six children in Jersey City, Sarofiem’s journey is one of hard work and local roots. After completing high school at County Prep, he attended Montclair State University and earned his law degree from Rutgers Law School. Sarofiem later co-founded Sarofiem and Antoun, a law firm in Journal Square.

Sarofiem began his legal career representing clients in Jersey City Municipal Court before becoming a pool attorney for Hudson County and a per diem attorney for the Office of the Public Defender. He credits the judges he encountered early in his career for inspiring his approach to justice.

Reflecting on his new role, Judge Sarofiem shared, “The role of a municipal court judge is one where law and humanity intersect in deeply impactful ways. I am truly humbled and profoundly honored to serve in this capacity, and I pledge to approach each case with fairness, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to justice.”

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop congratulated Sarofiem on his appointment, saying, “Congratulations to our newest judge – the Honorable Mekhail Sarofiem. Our Jersey City court is the busiest in [New Jersey], and I know he will be an outstanding addition.”
