West New York Celebrates 126th Birthday

Published

on

On July 8, 1898, West New York officially became a township, replacing what was then known as Union Township. Now, 126 years later, the community continues to thrive as one of Hudson County’s most unique and vibrant municipalities.

Sitting atop the Palisades, West New York offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and is home to a diverse, working-class population with deep cultural roots. Over the decades, the township has grown from a textile hub into a lively urban center filled with small businesses, schools, parks, and historic architecture.

Bergenline Avenue, which runs through the heart of town, remains one of the busiest commercial strips in the state. Lined with locally owned shops, bakeries, and restaurants, it reflects the town’s strong Latino heritage and serves as a gathering place for residents during annual parades, cultural celebrations, and holiday events.

As West New York marks another year, it stands as a proud example of progress, diversity, and community pride.

Happy birthday, West New York.
