HOBOKEN, N.J. – Councilman Dr. Michael Russo officially entered the race for Hoboken mayor today after Mayor Ravi Bhalla confirmed last month that he would not seek re-election.In a campaign video released this morning, Russo, the city’s longest-serving council member, framed himself as a candidate with deep local roots and a commitment to making life in Hoboken more affordable and accessible.

“I’ve spent more than 20 years fighting for you,” Russo said. “Whether it’s fighting for lower rent, helping when your power goes out, or taking on City Hall, I’ve seen mayors come and go. Now, I’m running to improve our quality of life, make our sidewalks and parks safer, and bring a spirit of relentless positivity that’s more powerful than any political infighting.”

Russo, the son of former Mayor Anthony Russo, emphasized his vision for Hoboken. “I’m running to make living here less expensive, to make sure new projects benefit everyone, and to support our schools in new, innovative ways,” he added.

His campaign also stressed unity across party lines. “Democrat, Republican, and everything in between, Team Russo welcomes you with open ears, open hearts, and open arms,” he said.

Russo’s candidacy follows months of speculation, including his No. 10 ranking on HudPost’s 2025 Power List, written by contributor Michael Shurin. The list noted Russo’s potential to revitalize Hoboken’s influence in county politics, stating, “If Craig Guy and the HCDO are going to reemerge in Hoboken politics and make inroads into LD-32, it will be because of 3rd Ward Councilperson Michael Russo.”
