Put the Phone Down: Distracted Driving Crackdown Kicks Off in April

The Secaucus Police Department will participate in a national distracted driving enforcement campaign this April, joining more than 10,000 law enforcement agencies across the country in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) “Put the Phone Away or Pay” initiative.

“This annual initiative… unites over 10,000 law enforcement agencies across the country to foster safer driving habits,” Secaucus Police said in a statement.

Drivers are urged to keep phones out of reach and avoid texting or using social media while driving. “No post, snap, or scroll is worth the risk,” Secaucus Police said. Tips include pulling over before sending a message, using a “designated texter,” and enabling “Do Not Disturb” features.

Other Hudson County police departments have not yet announced their participation in this year’s campaign, though departments like Guttenberg have previously taken part in similar federally backed efforts.

New Jersey law prohibits the use of handheld electronic devices while driving. Fines range from $200 to $800, with third-time offenders facing points and possible license suspension.

“Our goal is simple,” Secaucus Police said. “We want everyone to reach their destination safely.”
