Secaucus First Responders Save Man’s Life with CPR

A coordinated emergency response by Secaucus police officers and medical personnel led to the successful revival of an unresponsive man on Julianne Terrace earlier this week.

On March 18 at approximately 3:57 p.m., Secaucus police responded to the 200 block of Julianne Terrace for a report of a man who was not breathing. According to the department, Sergeant Nicholas Spangenberg and Officer Thomas Schaffer initiated CPR immediately upon arrival.

“Upon arrival, Sergeant Nicholas Spangenberg and Police Officer Thomas Schaffer immediately began Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR),” says Chief Dennis Miller. “While performing CPR, Police Officers Matthew Cutola and Thomas Spuler readied their Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and assisted with CPR until the arrival Hudson Regional Hospital EMT’s.”

Authorities said the man regained a pulse shortly after and ultimately regained consciousness. He was transported to Hudson Regional Hospital and remains in stable condition.

In a statement issued with the department’s press release, Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller credited the officers’ training and praised the joint response. “The continuous training of Secaucus police officers once again proved fruitful and saved another life,” Miller said. He also acknowledged the contributions of Hudson Regional Hospital EMS and Jersey City Medical Center paramedics.
