Palestine Solidarity March Draws Roughly 100 People to Hoboken Waterfront

A Palestine solidarity march drew approximately 100 participants to the Hoboken waterfront Sunday, organized in part in response to the March 27 arrest of a Hoboken resident accused of planning to assassinate a Palestinian activist in New York City.

The event, co-sponsored by Hoboken Justice, CAIR-NJ, Ceasefire Now NJ, Hudson County Democratic Socialists of America, and several other organizations, began at Pier 13 at 11:30 a.m. and proceeded along the waterfront to Pier A.

Isaac Jimenez of Hudson County Democratic Socialists of America said the march was held to raise awareness. “We just did a mile march for Palestine and for awareness of what’s going on in South Lebanon right now,” Jimenez said.

Hoboken resident Emily, who did not provide her last name, cited the arrest as a motivating factor. “About two weeks ago, a young man was arrested in Hoboken with plans to firebomb the home of a prominent Palestinian-American activist in our city,” she said. “And our politicians released nothing condemning his actions, nothing specifically stating his anti-Palestinian hate and the extremism that comes along with it.”

Following the arrest, activist group Hoboken Justice circulated a petition signed by 100 residents and sent it to municipal, county, and state representatives demanding a statement disavowing anti-Palestinian rhetoric. CAIR-NJ also held a press conference April 2 in front of Hoboken City Hall calling for elected officials to publicly address the matter.
