Jersey City Mercy House Distributes 200 Turkeys to Families in Need as Part of Record-Breaking Giveaway
Jersey City families received a warm dose of holiday cheer as Mercy House distributed 200 turkeys during the Archdiocese of Newark’s largest-ever Thanksgiving Giveaway. The initiative, which spanned three days from November 19-21, saw a record-breaking total of 650 turkeys handed out across locations in Newark, Elizabeth, and Jersey City.
In addition to turkeys, families were provided with holiday staples such as stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mashed potatoes, ensuring they could enjoy a complete Thanksgiving meal. Cheryl A. Riley, director of The Mercy House, emphasized the mission behind the effort, saying, “Love and family are hallmarks of the Catholic Church, so it’s only fitting that The Mercy House helps our clients celebrate a holiday that honors both. This year, we were able to bring joy to more people than ever thanks to the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our staff and volunteers.”
The event was supported by countless volunteers who helped make the distribution process seamless. Approximately 250 turkeys were distributed in Newark, 200 in Elizabeth, and 200 in Jersey City, surpassing the previous year’s milestone of 540 turkeys given away.
Looking ahead, Mercy House is now preparing for its annual Christmas Gift Giveaway, which will take place on December 17 in Newark, December 18 in Elizabeth, and December 23 in Jersey City. The initiative aims to distribute toys, clothing, and other gifts to children up to age 17. Donations of new, unwrapped toys, clothing, gift cards, and wrapping paper are being sought to ensure a joyful holiday season for families in need.
