Jersey City Man Previously Tied to 50 Cent Burglary Charged with Rape

Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello announced that a 35-year-old Jersey City man was arrested on Friday, August 8, 2025, in connection with a sexual assault that occurred in Jersey City on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
Richard Murphy, of Jersey City, is charged with aggravated sexual assault, burglary, and aggravated assault. He was taken into custody at Jersey City Medical Center and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, Jersey City police responded to Sussex Street shortly after 11:30 p.m. on July 26, 2025, following a report of a sexual assault. Officers found a female victim who stated that an unknown man physically and sexually assaulted her as she entered a residence. She was transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.
News reports show Murphy was among three men arrested in June 2021 following a burglary at a corporate apartment in Cliffside Park used by rapper 50 Cent. Authorities at the time alleged the suspects stole approximately $3 million in cash and jewelry. Murphy faced charges in that case including theft, burglary, conspiracy, receiving stolen property, and criminal mischief.
Acting Prosecutor Mello credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit for the investigation and arrest, with assistance from the Hudson County Regional S.W.A.T. and the Jersey City Police Department.
