Jersey City Appoints LGBTQ+ Liaison to Strengthen Community Ties
JERSEY CITY, NJ – Jersey City has announced the appointment of Police Officer Melissa Mendola as the new LGBTQ+ Liaison for the Police Department.
Mayor Steven M. Fulop shared the news, emphasizing the significance of Officer Mendola’s role in fostering stronger relationships between law enforcement and the LGBTQ+ community. “As a city that celebrates diversity and inclusivity, I am confident that Officer Mendola’s dedication and leadership will not only strengthen the critical relations between the LGBTQ+ community and our police department but also ensure that Jersey City continues to set a standard for equity and respect in public safety,” Mayor Fulop said.
Officer Mendola, a member of the Field Training Unit, says she will focus on addressing and educating officers about bias incidents. Her responsibilities include ensuring bias situations are properly identified and handled, from the initial response through follow-ups.
“My role is to shed light on these situations, ensuring they are properly identified and handled appropriately. This role gives me the unique opportunity to work closely with newer officers, equipping them with knowledge and training about policies specific to the LGBTQ+ community. I look forward to being a resource, a voice, and an ally for years to come,” Officer Mendola stated.
In her liaison capacity, Officer Mendola will attend meetings at various governmental levels, develop community events, and spearhead training programs that promote inclusivity.
Police Director Tawana Moody expressed confidence in the appointment, saying, “I have no doubt that Melissa will bring her energy and empathy to this position and make a meaningful difference in strengthening the bonds between the police department and the diverse communities we serve.”
