Weehawken Township To Join Opposition to Braddock Park Diversion Proposal

Published

on

The Township of Weehawken is set to consider a resolution opposing the proposed diversion of parkland in James J. Braddock North Hudson County Park at its upcoming council meeting. The resolution, listed under “New Business,” mirrors similar actions taken by Union City and West New York. This initiative reflects growing local opposition to the use of Braddock Park for the placement of North Bergen pre-kindergarten (pre-K) trailers.

The resolution criticizes the diversion application filed by North Bergen, stating it conflicts with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Green Acres Program regulations. These rules discourage the use of parkland for non-recreational purposes unless the project satisfies a compelling public need or provides significant public benefit.

This measure builds upon Union City’s earlier resolution passed in October 2024, which outlined similar objections. Union City Mayor Brian Stack, a vocal critic of the plan, emphasized the importance of protecting parkland for public use. West New York has also opposed the proposed diversion, citing insufficient justification for the continued occupation of Braddock Park by the pre-K trailers.

North Bergen, meanwhile, has defended the application as necessary to address overcrowding in schools and provide accessible education. Officials from North Bergen announced last month their intention to separate from the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue department, a move tied to ongoing disputes with neighboring municipalities.

The NJDEP has yet to issue a final decision on the parkland diversion. However, the growing opposition from neighboring towns may add pressure for alternatives to be explored.

For now, the future of the pre-K trailers in Braddock Park remains uncertain.
