Secaucus Doctor Charged With Trading Opioids for Sex

A Secaucus physician was charged with unlawfully distributing opioids, soliciting sexual favors from patients in exchange for prescriptions, and defrauding New Jersey Medicaid, U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced Friday.
Ritesh Kalra, 51, was charged with three counts of unlawful opioid distribution and two counts of healthcare fraud. Kalra made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge André M. Espinosa in Newark and was released on home incarceration with a $100,000 unsecured bond. He was ordered to cease practicing medicine and prescribing medication while the case is pending.
“Physicians hold a position of profound responsibility—but as alleged, Dr. Kalra used that position to fuel addiction, exploit vulnerable patients for sex, and defraud New Jersey’s public healthcare program,” said U.S. Attorney Habba.
Investigators allege that between 2019 and 2025, Kalra operated a pill mill out of his Fair Lawn office, issuing over 31,000 prescriptions for oxycodone and other controlled substances, including to patients who had no medical need. Former employees reported that female patients accused Kalra of sexual assault and coercion, including demands for oral sex and forced anal intercourse during appointments.
Kalra also allegedly billed Medicaid for office visits and counseling sessions that never occurred, submitting falsified medical records and progress notes. In one instance, he continued prescribing opioids to a patient who was incarcerated and had no contact with him.
Each count of unlawful distribution carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine, while each healthcare fraud count is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Individuals who believe they may be victims or have information about the case are urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or email NK-Victim-Assistance@fbi.gov.
The investigation involved the FBI, DEA, HHS-OIG, IRS-CI, SSA-OIG, New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, and Fair Lawn Police Department. Kalra is represented by defense attorney Michael Baldassare.
The charges are allegations, and Kalra is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
