North Bergen, NJ – A North Bergen police officer resigned last year after being suspended for a sexual assault charge, according to a newly released report.

Officer Roberto Gonzalez was suspended on March 8, 2023, after being charged with sexual assault for an off-duty incident. An internal investigation backed up the allegations based on statements Gonzalez made to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The North Bergen Police Department moved to fire Gonzalez, but before the process was complete, he resigned on November 11, 2024.

Gonzalez’s resignation was included in a major discipline report released on January 15, 2025, as part of a state effort to make police misconduct cases public. The report confirms that his criminal case is still active.

North Bergen officials have not provided further comment on the case.
