North Bergen Resident, 31, Suffers Stroke; Family Calls on Community for Help

North Bergen, NJ – At just 31 years old, Mikey Nunes was on the path to building his future. A former North Bergen High School wrestler and William Paterson University graduate, he was working as a financial planner with dreams of opening his own business to help minorities retire securely. But on February 14th, everything changed when he suffered a sudden hemorrhagic stroke.
Mikey was found unconscious on his office floor and rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered a spontaneous brain aneurysm had led to the life-threatening stroke. Emergency surgery was his only chance at survival. His family spent nine agonizing days by his side, uncertain of what the future would hold. Then, on February 23, a breakthrough—Mikey opened his eyes for the first time since the stroke.
“It was the moment we had been praying for,” his family shared. “But we also knew this was just the beginning of the fight.”
Though his survival is extraordinary, his journey is far from over. Mikey now faces a long road to recovery, requiring extensive rehabilitation, specialized therapies, and ongoing medical care. The financial burden of these treatments has placed an overwhelming strain on his family.
“We never expected to be in this position,” his loved ones said. “Mikey is strong, but he needs help to get through this. Any donation, no matter how small, will make a difference.”
To support his recovery, loved ones have launched a GoFundMe fundraiser, calling on the North Bergen community to rally behind one of their own. Those who knew Mikey—whether from his time on the wrestling mat, in the classroom, or through his professional work—are encouraged to contribute in any way they can.
“Even if you can’t donate, please share his story, send prayers, and keep him in your thoughts,” the family urged. “We are so grateful for the love and support we’ve already received. With this community behind him, we know Mikey will keep fighting.”
