John Bender, a longtime North Bergen resident and Democratic committeeman, died peacefully on July 3, 2025. He also served on the township’s Zoning Board of Adjustment and worked for the North Bergen Board of Education.

Bender’s daughter, Reann Bender, shared that he passed away early in the morning, surrounded by his daughters as Elton John played. “He’s at peace with his parents to guide him,” she said. “Dad was a good man with a big heart. He was the best father in the entire world. He will be missed greatly.”

Mayor Nicholas Sacco announced Bender’s passing Thursday, extending condolences on behalf of the township. “It is with a heavy heart that we inform everyone on the passing of our beloved committeeman, John Bender,” Sacco said. “On behalf of myself, the Commissioners and the North Bergen Democratic Municipal Committee, we extend our sincere sympathy to John’s family.”

Bender was the son of James R. Bender Sr., who owned and operated the original Mr. Big’s Super Hero’s on Willow Avenue in Hoboken.

Commissioner Allen Pascual stated, “My deepest condolences go out to John’s family. RIP John.” Commissioner Hugo Cabrera added, “Our deepest condolences go out to John’s family and friends. He was very loved and will be missed.”

A wake will be held Monday, July 7, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Vainieri Funeral Home. A Mass will follow on Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church.
