On October 1, Congressman Rob Menendez (NJ-08) led all New Jersey Democratic members of Congress in calling for the Trump Administration to reverse its decision to withhold federal funding from the Hudson Tunnel Project, a key component of the Gateway Program and the largest transportation infrastructure investment in U.S. history.

In a letter addressed to officials from the Office of Management and Budget, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and the Federal Transit Administration, the delegation criticized the funding freeze as “politically motivated” and emphasized the project’s economic and transportation significance. The Hudson Tunnel Project is projected to generate 95,000 jobs and $19.6 billion in economic activity during construction, while ultimately serving 200,000 daily cross-Hudson passengers.

“The construction of this project is already underway, with several pieces near completion, and major milestones are consistently being met on schedule and on budget,” the letter stated. “It is essential that construction on this project continue without interruption.”

The letter also referenced past setbacks, including the 2011 cancellation of the Access to the Region’s Core (ARC) project by then-Governor Chris Christie, as a cautionary precedent. Lawmakers warned against repeating such delays, noting the regional and national implications of inaction.

The delegation further condemned the timing of the funding freeze, citing concurrent Democratic efforts to keep the federal government open and restore healthcare coverage. “These political games are unacceptable, and the American people deserve better,” the letter said. “We urge you to immediately cease your obstruction of this vital project.”

Menendez, who previously served on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, has advocated for full funding of the Capital Investment Grants program. Key components of the Gateway Program, including the Hudson Tunnel Project, Portal North Bridge, and Tonnelle Avenue Bridge, are located within New Jersey’s Eighth Congressional District.
