Mayor Fulop Honors NJCU President Andrés Acebo
Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop honored New Jersey City University (NJCU) President Andrés Acebo with an official proclamation recognizing his leadership during a ceremony at City Hall on November 13.
The proclamation commended Acebo’s efforts in guiding NJCU through a financial crisis, calling it “a remarkable recovery which will be a case study throughout higher ed.” It also described his tenure as the university’s “most critical period in its 98-year history.”
Ward E Councilmember James Solomon and newly appointed Ward B Councilmember Maureen Hulings attended the event to show support for Acebo and the university.
Acebo, a Union City native and the first-generation son of Cuban exiles, became NJCU’s interim president in 2023 and was later appointed the institution’s 13th president. He is the youngest known leader of a regional public university in New Jersey and only the third Hispanic to lead a four-year public higher education institution in the state.
During his presidency, Acebo led efforts to stabilize NJCU and initiated a merger with Kean University, aimed at creating “Kean Jersey City.” He has also been recognized in multiple statewide rankings, including ROI-NJ’s No. 1 Influencer in Higher Education and NJBiz’s Education Power 50 list.
