Kearny Police Promote Two Officers to Detective Rank

Officers Christopher Montes and Estefania Castaneda have been promoted to detective after successfully completing the Kearny Police Department’s probationary detective program. The designation recognizes their investigative skill, professionalism, and commitment to the Kearny community.
Detective Montes, 35, joined the department in 2017 following service in the U.S. Army Reserve and a prior career in the automotive industry. He deployed to Bulgaria in 2024 as a Military Police Officer and resumed his duties in Kearny in 2025. He is known for detailed investigations, strong communication skills, and a proactive approach to complex incidents. Montes is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems with a focus on Computer Forensics.
Detective Castaneda, 34, began her public service career as an EMT and later served with both the Hudson County Department of Corrections and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office. She joined the Kearny Police Department in 2024. Fluent in Spanish, she has earned recognition for clear reporting, empathy toward victims, and strong investigative instincts.
The department’s detective selection process includes a rigorous assessment of investigative capability, judgment, and communication. According to Detective Bureau Supervisor Sergeant John Fabula, “They continually pushed to find answers, asked the right questions, and were always hungry for more work. That kind of initiative is what makes strong detectives.”
Chief Macfie and department leadership congratulated both detectives and expressed appreciation for their continued service.
