Kean University and New Jersey City University (NJCU) have signed a definitive agreement this week to move forward with their planned merger, which aims to expand access and opportunity for students across the region.

The agreement, approved by both universities’ governing boards, outlines the framework for establishing Kean Jersey City, a new entity that will absorb NJCU operations under Kean’s leadership. The merger is expected to be completed by July 2026, pending final approval from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the New Jersey legislature, and the U.S. Department of Education.

“This agreement represents a powerful step forward in creating a more inclusive, student-centered system of higher education in New Jersey,” said Kean President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. “Kean Jersey City will open new doors for students across the region and empower them to thrive in an increasingly complex world.”

Under the agreement, current NJCU students will become Kean students and retain their academic credits, financial aid, and merit scholarships. They will pay Kean’s tuition and fees, which are currently the lowest in the state, and gain access to Kean’s student services, housing, and campus life in Jersey City.

The merger also establishes a joint advisory committee to evaluate athletic programming at the Jersey City campus, with final recommendations due by December 15, 2025. An advisory steering committee will guide the academic and operational integration and assist with regulatory reviews.

“The Kean University Board of Trustees unanimously supports this merger because it is truly transformative,” said Steve Fastook ’06H, board chair. “This is a model for how institutions can come together to increase access, drive innovation and create meaningful public impact.”

NJCU President Andrés Acebo emphasized the merger’s significance for NJCU’s future. “This step represents a significant milestone in a process designed to secure the future of our institution and the communities we have proudly served for nearly a century,” Acebo said.

NJCU’s Board of Trustees also voted unanimously to approve the merger. Newly elected board chair Raphael Salermo said, “This merger ensures continuity of NJCU’s historic mission while providing the institutional strength and resources needed to thrive in a changing higher education landscape.”
