Jersey City Receives Grant to Develop Age-Friendly Action Plan

The Jersey City Department of Health and Human Services Division of Senior Affairs received a $24,000 state grant to develop the city’s first Age-Friendly Action Plan.

The grant was awarded by the New Jersey Age-Friendly Program and is intended to support a community needs assessment focused on older residents. Jersey City has more than 35,000 adults age 60 and older.

Under the initiative, the Division of Senior Affairs will partner with the Urban League of Hudson County, Lutheran Life Jersey City, and the Jersey City Chapter of AARP to gather information from seniors across neighborhoods. The assessment will include multilingual surveys, listening sessions, and focus groups on issues such as transportation, housing, communication, healthcare navigation, and social engagement.

Results from the assessment will be used to create the city’s first formal Age-Friendly Action Plan, which will guide local policies and programs related to the needs of older adults.

The grant is part of the New Jersey Department of Human Services’ Age-Friendly Grants Program, which aims to advance age-friendly planning and community engagement statewide. Jersey City’s project represents a local step in the broader effort to support environments where older adults can thrive.
