Lieutenant Richard Garcia of the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office died on June 17, 2025, due to health-related complications, concluding a 24-year law enforcement career.

Garcia joined the department in 2001 and advanced to the role of Detective Lieutenant, serving in internal affairs, background investigations, and court process operations. Since 2020, he also served as a task force officer with the FBI in Newark. He was known for his leadership, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to public service.

“He exemplified the highest standards of law enforcement,” the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office stated. “His legacy of service, honor, and compassion will be carried forward by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.”

Garcia earned an associate degree in criminal justice from Hudson County Community College. Throughout his career, he supervised officers, coordinated training and recruitment, and maintained department compliance standards. His colleagues described him as a mentor and role model whose influence reached well beyond the department.

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis, the Democratic frontrunner in the race for Hudson County Sheriff, offered his condolences. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Lt. Rich Garcia and his family in the HCSO,” Davis said. “Thank you for your service to the people of Hudson County. Rest in peace.”
