Hoboken Earns Silver Bicycle Friendly Community Award, Highest Rating in New Jersey

Hoboken has been named a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, the highest such designation in New Jersey and a distinction shared only with Princeton.

The silver-level rating is an upgrade from the bronze designation Hoboken received in 2016. Since then, the city and Hudson County have installed bike lanes on nearly half of Hoboken’s streets through grants, roadway projects, and public improvements. In 2021, Citi Bike expanded to Hoboken and has since enabled more than 2 million rides throughout the city.

“As both Mayor and a regular cyclist, I’m proud that our community has earned a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community award,” said Mayor Emily B. Jabbour. “Our goal has always been to make Hoboken safer and more accessible for everyone, and this recognition shows that we are on the right path.”

Andrew Wilson, executive director of Bike Hoboken, said the award reflects a collective effort. “This recognition validates the hard work of city officials, advocates, and residents who have championed protected bike lanes, traffic calming measures, and bicycle infrastructure investments,” Wilson said.

Over 900 communities applied for the designation this cycle. Seventy-nine new and renewing awardees were recognized, joining 444 total Bicycle Friendly Communities across all 50 states.
