Governor Signs Law Finalizing Merger of NJCU and Kean University
Governor Phil Murphy has signed legislation authorizing the formal merger of New Jersey City University (NJCU) into the Kean University system, a move officials say secures the future of public higher education in Hudson County.
The new law, passed by the New Jersey Legislature, enables NJCU to fully transition into Kean University, following a multiyear fiscal recovery effort prompted by NJCU’s declared financial emergency in 2022. The merger remains subject to final approval from federal and accrediting agencies.
In a letter to the campus community, NJCU President Andrés Acebo described the law as “a historic and hopeful milestone in our university’s journey toward long-term sustainability and growth.” He thanked Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet and both institutions’ teams for their “partnership and commitments” that helped make the merger possible.
“For nearly 100 years, NJCU has served as a vital pathway to public higher education in Hudson County and Jersey City,” Acebo wrote. “Through this merger, that mission will continue and be strengthened.”
The legislation includes a $25 million state appropriation to support the transition, along with an additional $44 million for infrastructure improvements on the Jersey City campus. According to Acebo, the funds represent one of the largest single investments in NJCU facilities in decades.
The merger will expand academic offerings, student services, and research and career opportunities while maintaining the university’s presence in Jersey City.
