Congresswoman McIver Recognizes NJCU President in House Speech

U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver, whose congressional district includes part of Jersey City in Hudson County, recognized New Jersey City University President Andrés Acebo during remarks on the House floor, highlighting his leadership at the institution.
McIver said Acebo, the 13th president of NJCU, is a Hudson County native and the first generation son of Cuban immigrants who grew up in Union City. She noted that he is the youngest president to lead a public university in New Jersey.
“A proud Hudson County native and the first generation son of Cuban immigrants, President Acebo grew up in Union City and now leads one of our state’s most vital Hispanic serving institutions,” McIver said.
According to McIver’s remarks, NJCU faced a $22 million deficit and a fiscal emergency when Acebo took office. She said that, in less than two years, he stabilized the university’s finances.
“Now the youngest president ever to head a public university in our state, when he stepped into leadership, NJCU faced a $22 million deficit and a fiscal emergency,” McIver said. “In less than two years, he stabilized the university’s finances and restored confidence in an institution that serves working families across New Jersey’s 10th.”
McIver also said NJCU ranked first in New Jersey for social mobility under Acebo’s leadership and expanded opportunities for students.
“Under President Acebo, NJCU ranks number one in New Jersey for social mobility, expanded transfer access, increased enrollment, and reaffirmed its mission to make higher education affordable and accessible,” McIver said.
“President Acebo’s story reflects the very students NJCU serves: resilient and rooted in community,” she said.
