Arson Unit Investigating Fatal Fire in Bayonne

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department are investigating a fatal fire that occurred Tuesday, December 23, 2025, in Bayonne, according to Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., the Bayonne Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at a multi-story structure located at 537 Avenue A. Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from a third-floor unit of the building.

During suppression efforts, firefighters located an unresponsive female inside a bedroom. The victim was later identified as Irene Clark, 82, of Bayonne. She was transported to Hudson Regional Hospital Bayonne, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 9:30 a.m.

The investigation is being conducted by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department. Authorities stated that foul play is not suspected at this time.
