The New Jersey Reentry Corporation hosted its 2026 Annual Reentry Conference on April 2 at Saint Peter’s University, bringing together leaders from healthcare, government and the criminal justice system to discuss trauma and its role in reentry, the process of individuals returning to their communities after incarceration.

The event was emceed by former Governor Jim McGreevey, chairman of the New Jersey Reentry Corporation.

Governor Mikie Sherrill delivered the opening address, highlighting the need to address mental health within the justice system.

“I just keep looping back to mental health, because the areas where we find the most need are not in hospitals, but in our prison systems,” Sherrill said. “We must continue to deliver those services while people are incarcerated and provide wraparound services as they exit.”

The conference, themed “Invisible Wounds,” focused on trauma related to addiction, domestic violence, poverty, incarceration and war, as well as clinical approaches to behavioral and medical healing.

Keynote speaker Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor led discussions on how trauma impacts the brain and the importance of clinical care in recovery.

Information tables were set up throughout the event, offering resources and connecting attendees with organizations providing support services.

Attendance reached capacity, reflecting growing interest in addressing trauma and supporting successful reentry.
