Fatal Shooting in Weehawken

A fatal shooting in Weehawken on Thursday, August 15, 2024, is under investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit in collaboration with the Weehawken Police Department. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. near Park Avenue between 37th and 41st Streets. Police responded to reports of gunshots and found Jhonnier Gamboa Acosta, a 24-year-old male, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:14 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death.

Authorities have arrested a suspect, 67-year-old Juan Perez, following the initial investigation. Perez is charged with multiple offenses, including murder and unlawful possession of a weapon. He is currently held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility, awaiting his first court appearance. Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez credited the swift cooperation of the Weehawken and Union City Police Departments for the prompt apprehension.

The investigation is ongoing, and Prosecutor Suarez emphasized that the charges are accusations, with Perez presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
