Prosecutor Investigating Death of Inmate at Hudson County Correctional Facility

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny.

According to officials, correctional staff found 63-year-old Derrick Ellis of Jersey City unresponsive inside his cell in the facility’s medical unit shortly after 12:15 p.m. on Friday, March 21. Onsite personnel administered emergency aid before Ellis was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:20 p.m.

The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General was notified in accordance with state guidelines for in-custody deaths. No further details about the cause of death or circumstances have been released.

The case remains under investigation.
