This role is for reporters with prior newsroom experience who are curious, driven, and passionate about giving their community a voice. You’ll have the opportunity to pitch ideas, report from the field, and build your bylines while working closely with our editorial team. Key Responsibilities

• Research & Reporting: Pitch, research, and write stories on local news, community issues, and events across Hudson County.
• Interviewing: Connect with residents, leaders, and local experts to bring authentic voices into your stories.
• Fact-Checking & Editing: Ensure every piece is accurate, fair, and clear.
• Digital Publishing: Prepare content for online publication, including headlines, images, and social media copy.
• Collaboration: Communicate regularly with editors, contribute story ideas, and attend virtual editorial meetings.
• Community Engagement: Develop sources and relationships within Hudson County’s diverse neighborhoods.
• Field Coverage: Attend local board meetings, press conferences, community events, and other assignments throughout the county as needed (some travel within Hudson County required).

Are you at your best in front of the camera? We’re looking for a part-time freelance on-air personality based in Hudson County, New Jersey, to be a face and voice of HudPost’s video coverage. You’ll report on camera, host segments, and interview the people shaping our communities.

This role is different from our Reporter / Writer position. It centers on video storytelling, so you’ll need to be as comfortable behind the camera and in the edit as you are in front of it.

Key Responsibilities

• On-Camera Reporting & Hosting: Present news stories, event coverage, and recurring segments on camera with energy, clarity, and credibility.
• Interviewing: Conduct engaging on-camera interviews with residents, business owners, officials, and local newsmakers.
• Videography: Shoot your own footage in the field, including stand-ups, b-roll, and interviews, with good framing, lighting, and audio.
• Video Editing: Edit your footage into polished, publication-ready pieces for the web and social media, including captions and graphics.
• Scripting & Story Development: Pitch segment ideas, research stories, and write clear, accurate scripts.
• Social Video: Produce short-form vertical video for platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook.
• Field Coverage: Cover community events, press conferences, and breaking news throughout Hudson County as needed (some travel within Hudson County required).
• Collaboration: Work closely with editors and reporters, and attend virtual editorial meetings.

Requirements

• Prior experience working in a newsroom.
• A portfolio that includes published work, including a reel or links to your on-camera work.
• Strong on-camera presence and a clear, confident speaking voice.
• Hands-on videography and video editing skills.
• Skilled, well-prepared interviewer who can think on their feet.

Preferred Skills

Do you see the story in a single frame? We’re looking for a freelance photojournalist based in Hudson County to capture the people, places, and moments that define our communities, from breaking news and public meetings to festivals, high school sports, and everyday life.

This is a freelance, assignment-based role. Our editors will offer you assignments as coverage needs come up, and you’re welcome to pitch your own photo stories and visual features.

Key Responsibilities

• Assignment Coverage: Photograph local news, events, meetings, and features across Hudson County on a per-assignment basis, sometimes on short notice.
• Visual Storytelling: Produce photo essays and galleries that stand on their own as journalism.
• Captions & Accuracy: Write clear, accurate captions with correct names, dates, and locations.
• Editing & Delivery: Select, edit, and deliver publication-ready images on deadline.
• Collaboration: Coordinate with reporters and editors before, during, and after assignments.

Requirements

• Prior experience working in a newsroom.
• A portfolio that includes published work.
• Based in Hudson County, NJ, with reliable transportation to get to assignments.
• Own and are comfortable with your own camera equipment.
• Able to work respectfully with the public in fast-moving or sensitive situations.
• Committed to journalistic ethics: no staging or misleading edits.
• Dependable with deadlines and communication.

Preferred Skills

• Proficiency with Lightroom, Photoshop, or similar editing tools.
• Video shooting and editing experience (e.g., CapCut, Premiere) is a plus.

Just starting out, or still figuring out which industry is right for you? Our internship is built for people at the beginning of their career. No prior experience is required. All you need is curiosity, reliability, and a willingness to learn.

This is a hands-on introduction to how a working media company runs. You’ll see how a business operates, how an office works day to day, and how a newsroom takes a story from idea to publication. Whether you end up in journalism, marketing, business, or somewhere else entirely, you’ll leave with real experience and a clearer idea of what you want to do next.

What You’ll Learn & Do

• How a Business Works: Get exposure to the day-to-day operations of a local media company, including advertising, sales, events, and administration.
• How an Office Works: Build professional habits such as communication, scheduling, organization, and working as part of a team.
• How a Newsroom Works: Sit in on editorial meetings, shadow reporters and editors, and help with research, fact-checking, and story preparation.
• Digital Publishing: Learn the basics of publishing stories, photos, and social media posts.
• Explore Your Interests: Try different kinds of work and find out what fits you best.

Requirements

• Schedule: 16 to 24 hours per week.
• Location: In person. This is not a remote or hybrid position.
• Experience: None required. This internship is meant for those looking to start their career or explore what industry they like.
• Reliable, punctual, and open to feedback.
• Comfortable with basic computer skills and eager to learn new tools.
