A Jersey City man is facing multiple charges after allegedly firing two shots at Secaucus police officers during a tense standoff Sunday evening.

Police say the incident began around 7:45 p.m. on June 1, 2025, when officers responded to a report that a woman’s phone was taken by an acquaintance who also allegedly threatened her with a handgun inside a County Avenue apartment.

Roughly an hour later, Secaucus Police Sergeants Joseph Fuardo and Peter Maraldo located the suspect, Dhanraj Dass, 59, sitting in the doorway of 25 County Avenue. As they approached, a handgun was seen emerging from the doorway. Dass allegedly fired a round toward the officers, followed by a second shot as Sergeant Maraldo repositioned.

Dass then retreated into the building, prompting police to establish a perimeter and request assistance from the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team. Before the perimeter was fully secured, Dass was seen exiting another door and was taken into custody without incident—though no weapon was recovered immediately.

Due to concerns that other suspects could still be inside, a shelter-in-place was ordered and mutual aid was requested. Units from Bayonne, Hoboken, West New York, North Bergen, Lyndhurst, the State Police, and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office responded.

The SWAT team later cleared the building and recovered a stolen Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun, believed to be linked to the shooting.

Dass faces multiple charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses. He remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“This incident highlights the danger our police officers face on a daily basis and I am so grateful none of them were injured in this incident,” said Chief Dennis Miller. “The responding officers’ performance was courageous and disciplined based on the tenets of the training they are provided with.”
