North Bergen to End Use of Braddock Park Trailers

North Bergen will stop using classroom trailers in Braddock Park for preschool instruction starting September 2025, ending a 24-year practice that has faced criticism from state officials and local advocates. The district will launch a new free full-day Pre-K 4 program for all eligible children, along with a limited Pre-K 3 option for families who meet federal poverty guidelines.
The 17 temporary classroom units—located on 1.25 acres of Braddock Park—have been in use since 2001. Originally intended as a short-term measure, the trailers remained in place despite a 2011 directive from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), which found their placement violated state rules on the use of recreational land. The district continued to operate the site while seeking alternative options.
According to the district, beginning in fall 2025, Pre-K 4 classes will be held in local elementary schools. The Pre-K 3 program will be housed at a licensed Head Start facility and limited to 60 students.
In an announcement, Mayor Nicholas Sacco said the change will reduce financial strain on families. “They will not only see their children begin their educational journey with the best possible start, but will also save an estimated $10,000 per year by no longer being forced to pay out-of-pocket for daycare,” he said.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. George Solter stated that the program expansion is intended to increase access to early education. “We are proud to offer free full day Pre-K programs for the first time to better meet the needs of both our students and parents,” he said.
The district also said the move is part of an effort to comply with state regulations. North Bergen continues to work through the NJDEP’s Diversion Process, which requires the township to restore the affected parkland or replace it with land of equal or greater recreational value.
District officials said they are also planning to construct a permanent modular building to potentially expand enrollment for Pre-K 3 in the future.
Registration for the 2025–2026 school year opens May 1. Parents must apply in person at the current North Bergen Pre-K Center at 8701 Boulevard East. Registration hours are 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pre-K 3 enrollment will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
