Township officials, educators, and residents gathered Tuesday for the grand opening of North Bergen’s new junior high school, now officially named Nicholas J. Sacco Junior High School. The renaming, announced during a ribbon-cutting ceremony, honors Mayor Nicholas Sacco’s 30 years of service to the township.

“I’ve spent my life as an educator and public servant focused on delivering what North Bergen students need, so this recognition today with the renaming of our community’s wonderful new school in my honor is incredibly touching and humbling,” said Sacco. “I’m grateful to Dr. Solter and the Board of Education for this great honor, and I look forward to seeing the first students walk through the doors of the Nicholas J. Sacco Junior High School this week.”

The school will welcome seventh and eighth grade students starting Thursday. It features modern classrooms, advanced technology, and expanded facilities for arts and science programs. Officials described the building as a symbol of the township’s investment in preparing students for future success.

“The opening of this new junior high school represents years of planning, hard work, and commitment to our students’ future,” said Superintendent Dr. George Solter. “Renaming the school in honor of Mayor Sacco is especially meaningful, as his leadership and dedication to education have been instrumental in making this day possible.”

The event drew local leaders, including township commissioners and school officials, as well as former Hudson County Schools of Technology Superintendent Frank Gargiulo. The North Bergen High School band performed the national anthem.

Director of Special Projects Allen Pascual added, “Today we are not just opening a school, we are honoring a man whose life has been defined by his commitment to education and to North Bergen.”

Principal Adamarys Galvin noted the significance of the moment for students and staff. “Walking into a brand-new building filled with opportunity is exciting enough, but knowing that it carries the name of Mayor Sacco makes it even more meaningful,” she said.
