Jersey City Police Sergeant and Former Dumont Mayor Charged in Juvenile Sexual Assault Case

A 44-year-old Dumont man, Andrew LaBruno, who serves as a sergeant in the Jersey City Police Department and is a former mayor of Dumont, was arrested on November 17, 2025, in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a juvenile in Englewood, according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.

LaBruno was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child. The charges followed an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Englewood Police Department.

On November 17, the Englewood Police Department notified the Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit regarding a report of sexual assault. Authorities determined that LaBruno, who was not known to the juvenile, communicated with the victim through a social media application and arranged a meeting.

LaBruno allegedly went to the juvenile’s residence in Englewood and committed the assault while the juvenile was home alone.

LaBruno recently ran as a Democratic candidate for New Jersey General Assembly District 39 but was defeated in the November 4, 2025, general election.

Following his arrest, LaBruno was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
