Sukaina Tehfa, an 18-year-old Rutgers University-Newark freshman, won a seat on the Guttenberg Board of Education in Tuesday’s election.

Tehfa was the only candidate listed on the ballot for the seat and received 820 votes, about 86%, according to unofficial results. The other 132 votes were write-ins.

Tehfa said the win makes her the youngest member ever elected to the Guttenberg school board.

She is studying criminal justice with a minor in philosophy and serves as an academic senator in the university’s student government. She has also worked at the Guttenberg Resource Center and interned at the Guttenberg Municipal Court.

“Being elected at such a young age is an incredible honor,” Tehfa said. “I hope to inspire other young women to pursue leadership opportunities and become involved in their communities.”

She said she plans to advocate for students and support educational opportunities in the district.
