Hoboken Police Arrest Newark Man in Home Invasion Investigation
The Hoboken Police Department arrested Abdush-Shahududdin Sharif, age 38, of Newark, on charges related to a reported home invasion and weapons offenses, following an investigation led by Detective Jesse Castellano of the Major Crime Unit.
According to police, officers responded on Tuesday, Jan. 13, to a Court Street residence, where a victim reported that an unknown male had entered his apartment without permission. The victim told officers a verbal altercation occurred, and the suspect made threatening statements before leaving the scene.
“This arrest shows the quick, coordinated work of our patrol officers and detectives, who identified and apprehended the perpetrator and took a loaded firearm off our streets,” said Police Chief Steven Aguiar. “Our department takes all crime seriously, and we remain focused on keeping our community safe.”
Detectives canvassed the area, reviewed security footage, and interviewed witnesses before identifying Sharif as the suspect. An All-Points Bulletin was issued.
Two days later, on Thursday, Jan. 15, at approximately 6:02 p.m., officers responded to the 500 block of Court Street following a report of a suspicious male matching the bulletin description. Officers located the individual, identified him as Sharif, and placed him under arrest. Police stated that a search incident to arrest led to the recovery of a box cutter and a loaded Ruger LC9s 9mm handgun.
Sharif was transported to Hoboken Police Headquarters and processed on the following charges: first-degree home invasion, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. He was later taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation before being remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
“I thank the officers and detectives involved for their professionalism, dedication, and hard work,” Aguiar said.
