Hoboken Mourns the Loss of Council President Jen Giattino
The community of Hoboken is in mourning after the sudden passing of City Council President Jen Giattino. A dedicated public servant and mother of three, Giattino was remembered by colleagues and residents as a compassionate leader who worked tirelessly to serve Hoboken’s diverse community.
Giattino passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, with arrangements being handled by Lawton-Turso Funeral Home. While details of the services are forthcoming, a page on the funeral home’s website praised her dedication: “Jen’s devotion to her community was unmatched. Her kindness and dedication made her a cherished figure in the community she so proudly served.”
In a statement, Hoboken Mayor Ravinder S. Bhalla expressed deep sorrow over Giattino’s passing, noting, “Hoboken has lost a bright light, and she will be deeply missed. Her kindness, humility, and quiet determination made her a cherished figure whose impact will be felt for generations to come.” In honor of her legacy, Mayor Bhalla has directed all U.S. flags on City property to be flown at half-staff for two weeks.
Councilman Michael DeFusco, a close colleague, also expressed his grief. “Jen had an incredible spirit and was a beacon of inspiration for the entire community,” he said. “She was a fearless voice who spoke truth to power, and her dedication to our community set an example for everyone in public service. Hoboken has lost a true champion.”
Giattino’s impact on the community extended to all areas of Hoboken life, from advocating for seniors and the homeless to connecting with the city’s young professionals. Her dedication and warmth made her a respected figure whose legacy will continue to resonate.
A meal train has been established to support Giattino’s family during this difficult time, organized by Councilwoman Emily Jabbour. Further details and updates on services will be available through the funeral home’s website.
