Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will host a public celebration on Tuesday, September 9, marking 50 years since its founding in 1974. The event, taking place on the Journal Square Campus in Jersey City, includes formal remarks, student activities, and guest appearances.

HCCC was established following a 1973 feasibility study by the New Jersey Department of Higher Education and became the state’s first “contract” community college. It began by offering career-focused associate degrees and certifications, and was accredited in 1981.

Tuesday’s event begins at 2:00 p.m. in the Gabert Library. HCCC President Dr. Christopher Reber will speak alongside faculty, alumni, and students. Honorees include former Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise, former Board Chair William J. Netchert, Esq., and former President Dr. Glen Gabert. A 50th anniversary time capsule will be unveiled during the ceremony.

Campus-wide activities will follow. Actor Derek Luke, a Jersey City native, will participate in a scheduled fireside chat. Other offerings include art exhibits, live music, and family-friendly entertainment.

The celebration will conclude with a DJ set and champagne toast in Culinary Plaza Park from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., featuring DJ Prince Hakim and a recorded message from Robert “Kool” Bell of Kool & the Gang.

The event is free and open to the public.
