Gov. Nominee Mikie Sherrill Meets with Hudson County Young Democrats

Rep. Mikie Sherrill, the Democratic nominee for governor in the 2025, met with members of the Hudson County Young Democrats at Surf City in Jersey City on August 19 as part of her early campaign outreach.

Sherrill is a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and former Navy helicopter pilot who currently represents New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. Before entering politics, she served nearly a decade on active duty in the Navy and later worked as a federal prosecutor.

At the event in Jersey City, Sherrill framed the 2025 election as a critical moment for the country’s future and emphasized the importance of civic participation. “What is going on right now in this country is unacceptable,” she said. “We feel a responsibility to leave a country to you that is deserving of all that you may one day become.”

She warned against the idea of a nation that only works for the wealthy and politically connected, saying, “Instead of a country where no matter who you are or where you’re from you can succeed, we’re becoming a country that is just set up for the very, very wealthy, and that’s not acceptable.”

Calling on young voters to step up, Sherrill said, “We need to hear your voices. We need your innovation, your drive, and your vision, because we need your vote, and we need you to get all your friends out to vote.”

“This is the state that began the American comeback,” Sherrill said, referencing the Revolutionary War battles of Trenton and Princeton. “We are called upon to do that once again in 2025 so that when we celebrate 250 years of this nation, we are celebrating New Jersey and what we can build here.”

Hudson County Young Democrats president Matthew Hayden said the organization was proud to host Sherrill and views her as an ideal candidate to lead the state. “It’s huge,” Hayden said. “She’s an incredible candidate. We could not be more excited to back her in this election and do everything we can to get her elected. She’s got experience, she’s got pedigree, she’s a service-driven leader, and she is the kind of person we want in Trenton.”
