Fulop Reverses Course, Says McGreevey “On Track to Be the Next Mayor”

Mayor Steven Fulop acknowledged former Governor Jim McGreevey’s growing lead in the Jersey City mayoral race, reversing his earlier position that McGreevey’s chances were “very narrow” and “unlikely.”
“As things stand, McGreevey is on track to be the next mayor,” Fulop wrote in a recent tweet, referring to McGreevey’s newly released five-point plan focused on transportation and infrastructure. “Unless the other candidates show some vision or courage, which they haven’t, he’ll keep gaining ground.”
Fulop added, “This is smart,” praising McGreevey’s rollout while criticizing rivals for lacking substance. “The rest are stuck recycling tired lines: ‘developers bad,’ ‘everyone’s corrupt,’ ‘Jersey City is a mess,’ with no vision beyond those talking points. Their cautiousness on every issue including MLK/Bergen and Baldwin/Summit speaks volumes about how they would lead.”
The statement contrasts sharply with Fulop’s remarks from earlier this year following a CNN special revisiting McGreevey’s time as governor. At the time, Fulop tweeted: “McGreevey’s path to win mayor is very narrow/unlikely as it stands today due to his campaign being controlled by non-Jersey City.”
McGreevey responded then by saying he was “disappointed” but was focused on “fixing the finances, education, and quality of life for the people of Jersey City” rather than revisiting past controversies.
The mayoral race, set for December 2025, also features Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea, Council President Joyce Watterman, Councilman James Solomon, and former Board of Education President Mussab Ali.
