Community Mourns the Loss of Lafayette Legend Allen Nile Dunbar Sr.

Jersey City mourns the loss of Allen Nile Dunbar Sr., known to many as “Nile.” Nile was a beloved figure in the Lafayette community and dedicated his life to helping those in need. He was known for his emphasis on education, community, pride, hard work, self-reliance, and self-respect.

Nile created the Dunbar Leagues in basketball, baseball, football, and track and sponsored the leagues for over 50 years, allowing over 1000 children to participate. He was also a one-stop shop for the community and received numerous awards for his dedication to the community.

In recognition of his contributions, the City of Jersey City renamed a street in his honor. On September 24, 2011, the street between Van Horne/Maple and Johnston Ave was dedicated as Allen “Nile” Dunbar Sr. Way.

“His life’s work was a daily devotion to helping those in need, and he did just that,” said his family. “His legacy will continue to live on through the many people he has helped throughout the year.”
