A candle lighting ceremony and balloon release will take place on Wednesday, June 4, at 8 p.m. in Bayonne Park to honor the life of Justin Rivera, a former Hudson County Sheriff who tragically passed away while on duty. Friends, family, and community members are invited to join in a moment of remembrance.

Rivera, 29, was performing his duties at the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City when he fell from a window. The building had been closed to the public due to an unrelated power outage at the time. Officials have stated that the fatal fall appears to have been accidental in nature.

In a statement from the Hudson County Sheriff’s Superiors FOP Lodge, Rivera was remembered as a valued member of the department and a dedicated public servant. “Officer Rivera was a valued member of our department and a dedicated public servant who served our community with honor, integrity, and unwavering commitment. His loss is felt deeply across our ranks and throughout the community they so faithfully protected.”

Known for his unwavering commitment to service, Rivera’s legacy extends beyond his role as a sheriff. He was also a 3rd-degree black belt and a coach at Senshi Tori Mixed Martial Arts in Bayonne, where he mentored and inspired countless students. One of those students, Ziggy Panchenko, shared a heartfelt message, saying, “At my lowest, he saw potential and gave me the confidence to keep fighting. He pushed us, believed in us, and stood by us like family. He was a great mentor, a loving father to his daughter, and his legacy will stay with every fighter who walks through that gym.”

The martial arts academy, started by his father Ramon Rivera, has served as a training ground for local youth and adults alike, fostering discipline, respect, and strength.

Those wishing to participate in the ceremony are encouraged to bring either a red, black, or blue balloon, as these were Rivera’s favorite colors.

The event will be a chance for the community to come together, remember Rivera’s dedication, and celebrate his impact both in law enforcement and martial arts.
