Bayonne University Hospital Reports Zero Hospital-Acquired Infections for Two Consecutive Years

Bayonne University Hospital has recorded zero hospital-acquired infections for 2024 and 2025, making it one of the only acute care hospitals in New Jersey to achieve the milestone in two consecutive years, Hudson Regional Health announced Thursday.

Hospital-acquired infections affect approximately 1 in every 31 hospitalized patients nationally and are associated with increased patient mortality, longer hospital stays, and higher costs of care.

“Reaching zero healthcare-acquired infections for two consecutive years is no small feat,” said CEO and President Dr. Nizar Kifaieh. “It speaks to the dedication of our entire team at Bayonne University Hospital and the expert care they provide each and every day.”

Chief Hospital Executive Dr. Vijayant Singh credited the hospital’s staff. “This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to patient safety and clinical excellence, and we will continue to build on this success at Bayonne’s only acute care facility,” Singh said.

Director of Infection Control Cynthia Mercado-Reyes attributed the milestone to protocol and training. “Our focus on evidence-based protocols, staff training, and ongoing monitoring has been critical to ensuring patient safety and delivering the highest standard of care,” she said.

The announcement comes 15 months after Hudson Regional Health assumed operations of the facility following the prior operator’s bankruptcy. Since then, the hospital has reported improvements in patient experience scores, reduced Emergency Department wait times, and multi-million dollar infrastructure upgrades including lobby renovations and an overhaul of Emergency Department operations.
