Attorney General Investigates Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Jersey City
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred in Jersey City during the early morning of October 21, 2025. One adult male civilian died following the encounter. Authorities have not released the identities of the civilian or the officer involved.
According to a preliminary investigation, officers from the Jersey City Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit encountered the man near Bergen and Virginia avenues shortly after 1:00 a.m. Gunfire was exchanged, and the civilian was struck. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
Emergency responders provided medical assistance before transporting the individual to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:44 a.m.
The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is leading the investigation. No additional details have been released.
Under a 2019 state law, the Attorney General’s Office is required to investigate any death occurring during an encounter with law enforcement officers acting in an official capacity or while a person is in custody. The law also mandates that such cases be presented to a grand jury to determine whether an indictment is warranted.
